Glanville Environmental Celebrates Double Victory at 2024 UKSTT and Green Apple Awards with Client South West Water
Following success in 2023, Glanville Environmental has once again proven its dedication to innovation and sustainability with two prestigious award wins in 2024. The company's collaborations and commitment to cutting-edge technologies and environmental stewardship were recognised recently at the UKSTT Awards and the Green Apple Environmental Awards.
At the UKSTT Awards, held on 2nd October 2024 during the No-Dig Live event, Glanville Environmental, in collaboration with South West Water and supplier Reinert-Ritz, took home the Innovative Technology Award. The award recognised the debut of the Quick Pig System during the Isles of Scilly Rising Main Replacement Project, a groundbreaking initiative that improved the infrastructure while employing trenchless technology to minimise environmental impact. The Glanville Environmental team was on hand at the ceremony to accept the award and celebrate the success of this forward-thinking approach.
An overview of the project:
This project addressed the logistical and environmental challenges of replacing the Abbey Pit rising main on Tresco in the Isles of Scilly. The original 63mm rising main, installed over 20 years ago, was suffering from reduced flow and environmental spills. Faced with the difficulties of transporting heavy machinery to the remote island, the team implemented the innovative Quick-Pig system, developed by Reinert-Ritz. This technology, introduced for the first time in the UK, allows for efficient cleansing of the pipeline without the need for heavy equipment or extensive construction, making it an ideal solution for the island's sensitive environment.
The project involved installing five custom-built Quick-Pig units, which were delivered within six weeks. The system not only reduced environmental impact by eliminating the need for large vehicles but also enhanced health and safety by requiring only minimal personnel and equipment. The success of this project has prompted South West Water to consider expanding the Quick-Pig system to other rising mains across the Isles of Scilly and potentially on the mainland, setting a new standard for pipeline maintenance in remote locations.
In addition to the UKSTT recognition, Glanville Environmental proudly secured a Green Apple Environmental Award for the Innovative Use of Recycled Crushed Glass on the Isles of Scilly. This project, also undertaken alongside South West Water, formed part of a series of major infrastructure improvements and showcased how sustainable materials can be used in innovative ways to support vital works while reducing environmental impact.
An overview of the project:
The project involved replacing 825m of rising main, overcoming the challenge of transporting traditional aggregate to the remote location. Instead, we turned to a sustainable alternative—crushed glass—thanks to the innovative thinking of Engineering Manager Geoff Willcocks.
Inspired by successful projects in Australia, Geoff proposed using recycled crushed glass as pipe bedding material. This solution significantly reduced costs and environmental impact, as it eliminated the need for transporting heavy aggregates to the Isles. So far, 80 tonnes of crushed glass, equivalent to 240,000 wine bottles, have been used, aligning with Glanville's sustainability goals and saving on material and transport expenses.
Glanville Environmental takes great pride in these achievements, which highlight the importance of our collaborative success with South West Water. Reflecting on these accomplishments, Managing Director Jamie Treliving, said:
"The team identified this technology at previous no-dig forums and immediately began working on its procurement, recognising its potential and the benefits it could bring to our clients. By collaborating closely with SWW, they were able to deliver the project successfully within a year. This achievement highlights the company's unwavering commitment to our core values: innovation, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and strong partnerships. Winning this award again, following last year's success, is truly remarkable. Congratulations to the entire team involved."
Nick Blowey, Senior Project Manager, said:
“At South West Water, we’re always looking for new and innovative ways to deliver improvements on our network, while ensuring the environment is protected. We’re thrilled for our work to be recognised and to receive these two prestigious awards in partnership with Glanville.”
These award wins highlight Glanville Environmental’s ongoing leadership in delivering cutting-edge, sustainable solutions. We are proud to have made a lasting impact on the infrastructure and environmental sustainability of the Isles of Scilly, and we are excited about the potential to expand these innovative approaches to other projects within the UK water industry.
