Glanville Geospatial: New Tech Improves Efficiency & Output
Working alongside long-term client, the University of Exeter, the Glanville Geospatial team has been given the objective of completing terrestrial laser scans throughout the external areas of St Luke’s campus with the goal of providing a final deliverable consisting of a 3D model detailing building facades, windows, doors, and roofs, produced in Autodesk Revit 2022. The model will inform a planning consent and right of light exercise for a major campus development.
This was our largest scanning project to date using real-time registration and Surveyor, Jake, utilised a new scanner that provides quicker scans and on-site registration using a tablet PC, almost completely eliminating costly office-based post-processing.
We are constantly striving to improve efficiency and deliverable quality within Glanville Geospatial and the Trimble X12 offers significant technical advances. Scanning large areas can come with challenges for Surveyors, however, deploying the Trimble X12 turned what is usually a two-person survey into a 1 surveyor task, completing almost 800 scans across five days. This increased field productivity by over 100%, reduced data size by as much as 200%, and slashed office processing time by 300%.
The exercise meant we could provide real savings to the customer by being at the forefront of technology and providing a complete survey package that is difficult to compete with.
Now scanning is complete, our team is working hard to produce a 3D Model for the client using Autodesk Revit 2022.
