Truro Tidal Gates
Overview
ICE Award-Winning Sewer and Water Installation for Kier and the Environment Agency
Glanville Environmental is proud to have partnered with Kier on an Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) award-winning project for the Environment Agency. This work formed part of the major New Truro Tidal Gates scheme, where Kier acted as the construction partner for the Environment Agency. The part of the project was located within a busy boatyard and required precision engineering, innovative problem-solving, and seamless collaboration to deliver essential sewer and water infrastructure.
Scope of Works:
- Installation of 60m of 100mm diameter sewer
- Construction of 4 new manholes
- Installation of a 25mm water supply using a barrier pipe
Scheme
Truro Tidal Gates
Client
Kier (on behalf of the Environment Agency)
Project objective
Re-route 1.1km of rising main, 2.5km of gravity sewer & 600m of syphon sewer
Location
Truro Boat Yard
Divisions
Civils
Challenges
The project presented several significant challenges:
- Tight gradients demanded meticulous engineering to ensure compliance and functionality.
- Numerous shallow services, some embedded within concrete slabs, required careful excavation to avoid damage.
- A section of work was in highly contaminated ground, necessitating strict environmental controls to prevent cross-contamination.
The benefit
Our Approach
Working closely with Kier, Glanville Environmental implemented a collaborative and safety-first approach.
Precision Engineering
Achieved exact gradients for sewer installation.
Specialist Excavation
Utilised hand digging and vacuum excavation to protect existing services.
Environmental Management
Contaminated material was securely stored in roll-on roll-off skips to prevent cross-contamination.
Water Supply Protection
Installed barrier pipe to safeguard against contamination infiltration.
Outcome
Despite the complexity, the project was delivered on time and within budget, meeting all quality and safety standards. The successful completion contributed to Kier receiving an Institute of Civil Engineering Award in the South West, a recognition we are proud to share.
Collaboration at Its Best
This achievement reflects the strength of the partnership between Kier and Glanville Environmental. By working together, we overcame technical and environmental challenges to deliver a project that sets a benchmark for excellence.
