Environment Agency registration of discharges to groundwater -                

With effect from 1 January 2012, all septic tanks and sewage treatment plants discharging to groundwater must be registered with the Environment Agency.  If the discharge is 2 cu m/day or less, this is classed as small sewage discharge and such systems will be registered as exempt.  Full details of the registration process can be obtained through their website, at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/documents/Business/Technical_guidance_sewage_effluent.pdf 

In most cases, domestic treatment plants or septic tanks with a soakaway will be exempt from charges but must still be registered.
