Bristol Siphon Cleaning For Wessex Water

The problem

We were selected to assist on a large prestigious contract in Bristol cleaning siphons under the River Avon using Breathing Apparatus and Confined Space Teams. The siphons were becoming blocked which would mean that water could not flow away in times of high flow conditions which could have become a flood or pollution risk.

The solution

Glanville Environmental entered into the siphons to assist in the unblocking and cleaning of the siphons using Confined Space Teams wearing full Breathing Apparatus.  All operators are highly trained to carry out this operation and have all the relevant Confined Space Entry and Breathing Apparatus qualifications together with internal company training. This ensures efficient, professional and above all a safe working environment.

The result

The siphons were unblocked allowing maximum flow conditions to be restored and allowed the effluent to flow away safely. Part of this operation was even filmed by the BBC for a documentary. The BBC also filmed us carrying out a mock rescue with our Rescue Team. This mock rescue utilised our Confined Space Teams with the use of full Breathing Apparatus to rescue any casualty who may be trapped inside a confined space.

This contract was delivered on time and all siphons are restored to maximum flow. Glanville Environmental recorded no accidents or near misses during the works and our client was very happy with the results. Our confined spaces teams have very stringent safety procedures that are adhered to rigidly during the site operations.
